CGAL RECEIVES A TEST OF TIME AWARD AT SOCG 2023

The CGAL (Computational Geometry Algorithms Library) Project has been selected for the 2023 Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG) Test of Time Award. The prestigious award recognizes outstanding papers presented at the SoCG conference from at least 20 years ago that have had a significant impact on the field of computational geometry. Quoting the award committee:

``In this case the Committee deliberately and exceptionally overstepped its mandate of honoring individual papers since it strongly believes that CGAL is a contribution to the SoCG Community whose impact as a whole has been and still is at least as strong and profound as that of any individual paper.''

The CGAL Project is a joint effort of several research groups in academia and their industrial partner GeometryFactory. The project is steered by the CGAL Editorial Board, which among many other responsibilities, coordinates the review of submissions of new software packages. In its early stage the project was funded by the European Union research agency.

CGAL is an Open Source software library that provides robust and efficient implementation of algorithms and data structures for computational geometry. The approximately hundred packages offer triangulations, Voronoi diagrams, Boolean operations on polygons and polyhedra, point set processing, arrangements of curves, surface and volume mesh generation, geometry processing, alpha shapes, convex hull algorithms, shape reconstruction, AABB and KD trees to name but a few.

The library has been used worldwide in research and industry, in application areas such as computer-aided design, additive manufacturing, geographic information systems, and robotics. Since 2003 GeometryFactory has offered commercial licences as well as services to industrial users of the CGAL library, as CGAL is distributed under a dual licence (GPL/commercial).

The SoCG Test of Time Award will be officially given at the SoCG conference in Dallas in June 2023.
